For the fourth year, Lands' End has opened it's doors to the Dairyland Dare! Ride Start and Packet pick-up are at the Lands' End Comer Center. This venue has tons of parking, hot showers (don't forget your towel!), a real food service kitchen, air conditioning, and beautiful landscaping. Thank you Lands' End for hosting us once again!

Where and When is packet pickup?

Ride Start and Packet pick-up are at the Lands' End Comer Center. Your packet will include your waterproof map(s) and cue sheet(s), your bib number (pin it to your back), your helmet number (stick it to the front of your helmet), pint glass, and various other goodies. Please have a photo ID available. If you are picking up for a friend, pleas bring a copy of his/her photo ID, birth certificate or one hundred crisp $3 bills in a sealed white envelope. You may pick up your packet on Friday 8/8/2014 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. Doors will remain locked until 6:00PM on Friday (please - no eary birds). You may also pick up your packet on Saturday 8/9/2014 morning between 5:00AM and 7:45AM.

Can I overnight in the Lands' End parking lot?

The answer to this one is No. Land's End has been so gracious to open their doors to us for the event that we'd like very much to respect their request that we have no overnight parking on the property. You wouldn't know it, but there is a constant stream of semi trucks coming in and out of the distribution center so you probably wouldn't sleep that well anyway with all the noise. If you want to overnight in your vehicle, there is a Wal-Mart just down the road (they alway welcome RV parking), Governor Dodge State Park, Blue Mounds State Park, and Tom's Campground. Thank you for understanding!

Where are When do I start?

Riders will queue up in the circle drive in front of the Lands' End Comer Center.

Riders will be released onto the course in waves on fifteen minute intervals. Please plan your start appropriately based on your distance. You may start in an earlier wave than your distance dictates, but be aware that we do not start serving lunch until 11:00AM

  • 6:00AM & 6:15AM: 250/300K start
  • 6:30AM & 6:45AM: 150/200K start
  • 7:00AM & 7:15AM: 100/150/200K start
  • 7:30AM & 7:45AM: 50/100K start
  • 8:00AM Last official start

Anyone starting after 8:00AM will bypass the first 50K of the ride and will join the ride in progress on Military Ridge Rd via Schaeker Ln on the North side of the Lands' End Campus.

To encourage an easy and controlled roll-out through Dodgeville, each wave will follow an escort vehicle for the first couple miles. This escort vehicle will stop at all stop signs and at all traffic lights as necessary. You are expected to do the same. At the intersection of 191 and Bennett Rd, the escort vehicle will turn off the course and you will be waved to the right (staying on 191).

How will the course be marked? Are there maps and cues?

Depending on your goal distance, you will receive up to three waterproof/sweatproof maps at packet pick up. They will be 8.5x11 inches with the maps on one side and cues on the other. The actual maps and cues can be found here.

The course will be very well marked with route arrows. There will be at least two markings before each turn and at least one confirmation after each.
Route splits exist at:

  • Mile 32.1 (where the 50K riders begin their return and 100K+ continue)
  • Mile 61.1 (where the 100K riders begin their return and 150K+ continue)
  • Mile 75.2 (where the 150K riders and 200K+ part ways)
  • Mile 110.6 (where the 250K+ riders and 150/200K part ways)

There are two split points on the 250/300k route at the beginning of each 300K loop.

Each route split has a cut off time. In order to continue past the split and onto the longer route you must arrive before the cut off. Please plan your start time and pace so that you hit these splits before their cut off hours. Details of each split are below:

  • Mile 32.1 - 100K+ 10:00AM
  • Mile 61.1 - 150K+ 2:00PM
  • Mile 75.2 - 200K+ 3:00PM
  • Mile 110.6 - 250K+ 3:00PM
  • Mile 134.2 - 300K A 5:00PM
  • Mile 156.3 - 300K B 6:00PM

What if the weather turns bad?

The Dairyland Dare will run rain or shine. It will run if it's 40 degrees or 100 degrees. Having said that, we understand that we need to be responsible citizens and use common sense for the safety of our participants, volunteers, staff, and neighbors. We reserve the right to shorten the route, delay, or pause the event if we feel there is a significant risk of injury due to weather (hail, lightning, tornados, severe thundrstorms, or excessive heat). It is our sincere hope that we never have to do this. In the event that should need to do so, we will communicate out from out control center to the ham radio operators at rest stops, water stations, and in roving vehicles. We will also send priority messages vis SMS to any rider or volunteer carrying a subscribed, text capable cell phone. To subscribe to this service, just text DLD2014 to 41411(after July 1). All subscriptions to the service will be dropped one week after the event.

What are the cut off times that I need to be aware of?

In order to insure that we get all riders off the course (especially the 250K and 300K) before nightfall, the following cut-off times will be enforced. Depending on the distance you are riding, there are up to six cut-off times that you will need to meet. If you insist on proceeding on the route beyond these cutoff times, you must show that you have night safety equipment, surrender your bib number, and agree to disassociate yourself from the event.

What sort of food will be at the rest stops?

HEED, Gatorade, Water, Hammer Gel, Hammer Endurolytes.

Complex Carbs:
Bagels, Wheat Bread, Raw Revolution Bars, Larabars, Granola Bars, Animal Crackers, Gold Fish.

Muffins, Cookies, Gummy Worms, Strawberry Jam.

Chips, Pretzels, Gold Fish, Saltines.

Trail Mix, Beef Sticks, String Cheese, Mixed Nuts, Peanut Butter, Ham & Turkey Lunch Meat, Cheese Singles, (Plus Brats at GDSP and 5121 ZZ).

This is the general idea of what will be available on course. Some rest stops may vary slightly from this outline, but rest assured - you will not go hungry!

What if I have special needs? Can you help out?

If you don’t see what you want or need in the list above, you can prepare individual special needs bags to be sent out to the various rest stops. Just put your stuff into a ziplock bag and label it with your name and the rest stop where you would like to pick it up. There will be a drop table for each rest stop (except for Mineral Point) at registration. Note that special needs bags may be sent to rest stops only - not to water stops. Also note that we will not shuttle your special needs bag around the course for you. We advise that you don't place anything of value in your special needs bag - we accept no responsibility if you do. Consider each bag to have a one way ticket to the rest stop of your choosing. When you are at a rest stop, you may place your special needs bag into the rider return tote to have what's left sent back to the finish line. Be advised that we don't shuttle rider returns until the rest stop closes, so you might very well get to the finish line before your bag.

Can I send a piece of clothing back to the start venue?

If you want to have us bring something back from a venue (like a jacket, arm waremers, or leg warmers), ask a volunteer at the venue for a gallon sized ziplock and a sharpie. Put your stuff in the bag, write your name and rider number on the bag and drop it in the bin. If you are done with your special needs bag and want to pick it up at the finish, drop it in the bin too. Our shuttle driver will take it back to Lands'End where you can claim it at the info desk. In most cases the rider return bags will not be shuttled until the rest stop closes. Bear in mind that in some cases you could get to Lands' End well before your goods arrive.

What if I need a ride back to the start?

There will be drivers dedicated to bringing riders back to Lands' End. They will begin running at 8:00 AM and will make regular stops at each rest stop. If you need a ride, talk to the HAM radio operator at the rest stop. If you are stranded in-between rest stops, call Ride Central at 608-935-6798 (this number will be monitored on ride day only). Please be aware that it may take 30 minutes or more for a vehicle to become available. Please relax and enjoy the scenery!

Support vehicles will be on course with flashing amber lights and obvious support signage. They will be carrying tools, tires, tubes, CO2's and pumps. They can also carry you to the nearest stop if necessary.

I'd like to change my distance. Can I do that on course?

Absolutely! You may choose to ride more or less depending on how the day is going for you. At the finish, you'll declare your distance ridden. The split points and cut-off times are detailed above.

Please ride within your ability. The hotter it is, the slower you need to go. If you would like to downgrade to a shorter distance, that's no problem - decide out on the course. If you are used to cycling on the surface of the sun (St. Louis), then maybe you'll think it's cool here and you might want to stretch it out to 150K, 200K or even 250K. Fine with us.

Who are all these people supporting me so well?

20% of your entry fee is being donated to the volunteer groups who make this event possible. They live on these roads and come out on their own time to help. They deserve a hearty thank you. Please smile and say "Thank you!" many times.

What do I do if my bike breaks down?

We will have mechanics from Uphill Grind Bikes and Coffee, Machinery Row, Budget Bikes, Planet Bike, and Dream Bikes stationed at rest stops along the course. They are there to help you out should you need an adjustment or a fix. That said, please come with your bike ready to ride. If you have a breakdown on the course, flag down one of our many roving support vehicles. You may also call Ride Central at 608-935-6798 (this number will be monitored on ride day only). When calling be prepared to give your specific location on the course (road address or intersection is the best way for us to find you). They will be carrying a basic tool kit, tires, tubes, pumps, and Co2. If you your issue cannot be solved on the roadside, a support vehicle can shuttle you and your bike to the nearest rest stop where the local mechanic will take over.

Can I ride my tri-bike? Are aero bars allowed?

Yes indeed. Tri bikes and aero bars are allowed. For your own safety though, please stay out of the aero position and hold tight on the bull horns when riding in packs or negotiating the many tricky downhills on this course.

How should my bike be set up? What gearing do I need?

The hills here are short and steep. Some road sections will exceed 20% grade. Having some low gears can be a very nice thing. This of course, is a personal choice depending on your riding style and strength. But if you're asking, here are a few suggestions. Compact cranks (35x50) are great. Triple cranks are even better (30x39x53). If you're running a standard crank (39x53), you may want to consider a 27T or greater low gear in back. Some folks even run a MTB cassette in back (up to 34T) with a long cage deraileur!

Is this a closed course? Do I have to obey the rules of the road?

This is not a closed course. You will be sharing the road with motorists, farm implements, horses, and other cyclists. Please ride no more than two abreast and go to single file when necessary to allow faster vehicles to pass. Stay to the right at all times and do not cross left of center especially on blind corners where oncoming traffic cannot be seen. These roads are beautiful, but aging. Be aware that there may be broken pavement in places, bumps and debris to negotiate. Be aware that wildlife (deer, squirrels, rabbits, turkeys, cranes, hodags, snipes, trolls and many others) can jump out at any moment.

I really have to go pee! Is all the world my toilet?

NO. All the world is not your toilet. Riders urinating at the roadside is one of the biggest complaints from our neighbors. We will have port-a-potties at all the aid stations designated as "Rest Stop" above. You can hold it. We know you can. Thank you in advance!

What if I have a boo-boo? Are there 1st aid kits available?

There will be well stocked 1st aid kits at each rest stop. Here's what we'll have available:

Each support vehicle will also have a very basic 1st aid kit. We've got you covered for headaches, gastro-intestinal distress, sunscreen, and the basic scrapes and bruises. If you need emergency help, dial 911.

What's for dinner?

The post ride meal will be served from 11:00AM until 8:30PM and will consist of traditional cookout items (Brat Patties, Hamburgers, Chicken Breasts, Chicken Caesar Wraps, Black Bean Burgers, Watermelon Jicama Salad, Lime Cilantro Cole Slaw, Fiesta Quinoa Salad, Chips, Cookies, and Culvers frozen Custard). Add to this Wisco Pop!, and BEER on tap from Capital Brewey!

Can I get a meal for my wife/child/partner/pet monkey?

Certainly. Extra brats, burgers, wraps, sides, etc. can be purchased at very reasonable rates. Please do not feed brats to your pet monkey - they should be eating bananas.

Oh! My aching muscles! How about a Massage?

Massage students from Blue Sky School of Professional Massage Therapy will be on site to help you out. They will be giving complimentary massages from 12:00PM until 8:30PM in the Regatta Room of the Lands' End Comer Center. We are expecting well over a dozen students, so please don't be bashfull about putting your name on the list. Tips in any amount are greatly appreciated and will be donated to charity. Please plan to shower before hitting the massage table. Thanks!

I smell like yuck. Where can I rinse off?

The Lands' End Comer Center has full locker rooms and shower facilities. Do bring a towel and a change of clothes!

Will there be WiFi?

We will have a wi-fi network going. Bring your laptop if you need to check email or surf the net after the ride.

Love that Jersey! How do I get one?

We will have a limited number of past year's jerseys for sale at the event. We'll also have samples for try-on if you don't know what size you need. If we don't have the size you need on hand, we can order it for you. To order a jersey, all we need from you is your rider number and $75 + $5 S/H (cash or check). Once produced, we'll send it right out to you (6 week lead time currently). If you don't have cash or check, you can order a jersey online at until 8/20 (we'll have instructions at the event).
